No. 2: Burger, cig and a soda.

This is Ralphie Tar. His job, granite flooring. His dinner, a burger with everything on it, a side of fries, a Coke and a cigarette at the Dairy Inn in St. Petersburg. The resident came with his friend Bart Traham, who works in wood flooring. The two say they don't argue about the work they do, and that they have known each other for two years. They met in a Starbucks. They laugh and joke at the dinner table waiting for their food to arrive, smoking a cigarette together outside of the small ice cream shack. Once their burgers arrive, Tar said, "Once the food is in my mouth, no more pictures." At his request, I stopped. Here's a few images I made from hanging out with these guys while waiting for their food.

No. 1: Ducks at play

So here it is. The first post of my personal photo a day project. I went to the park to make images of people, or so I would have assumed. Instead, I found this flock of an assortment of ducks. I was drawn in, and actually made an image I really like (the first one, where it's duck lover's lane). Anyhow, after making images of ducks for awhile, they started to gather and seemed as though they were going to turn on me. They were hissing and coming closer. Lucky for me, my battery died anyway.

A photo a day

So, starting tomorrow, I am going to attempt to begin taking a photo a day, and posting it on this blog. I will still be updating my other projects on this blog as well, so to separate confusion, I will keep each title for the apad project labeled by number.
Why tomorrow? It is my brother's birthday. What better day could I have planned this launch for... Anyhow, wish me luck, and we will see where the photos take me.

P.S. The photos will be taken the day before, more than likely, as it is easier for me... We'll see though...

John's Pass

I think my favorite is the man with the fish lineup. I just love the rich texture and the movement with him pushing a fish out of the way.

Shotgun wedding

This is one image I made of John's Pass. Really like the emotion in this girl's face while she hold two guns. I knew that it was the women who ruled the Wild, Wild West.

So here's an image I made last night. Thought it was funny that a bird was casually walking atop a fishing boat. A little humor for everyone today.

Birds and bird watchers

Here's something I went and did on my own. Heard about the baby birds hatching behind the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary. Here's what I came away with.

Lost and found

So here's a story idea turned successful to print. The funny thing is the idea came from finding an injured bird at the beach outside of our Gulfport house. Talked to the SPCA ambulance driver and he said microchips in pets aren't updated as much as need be. I found a success story that could have taken a different route without a constant push from an employee in finding the family... read the story, i don't want to give anything away.

So, I was able to take the portrait and write the story. Double bonus! :) Pretty exciting, and was so happy. It printed in today's Neighborhood Times.

Multimedia work at the Times

Graduate Job Placement:
Worked on this project with Times Photographer Martha Rial. She is a great person to learn from. Truly gets to know her subjects and have fun while she works. (Made the homepage belt for three days.)



Ultimate Graduation:
This is my favorite clip of the summer thus far. I was given the opportunity to make the images, collect the audio, edit both and produce the entire project. It is a Jake May original. :) (This piece was the homepage lede story when published to the Web site. It was up for more than three hours. Then it moved to the secondary lede position, following it had shelf life on the belt for nearly another week.)


Here is one of my favorite details from the assignment.

Tampa Bay Rays-Red Sox Fan Feud:
On this project, it was a daily assignment, so much more fast-paced, on-deadline performance. I worked with Edmund Fountain on this assignment. Great, great photographer. And, he knows where to get the best Indian food in town, so we hopped over there after the assignment. I found the people and watched Edmund work his magic. Then, chatted with them for short, but sweet stints of audio. Came back to the office, then edited and produced the slideshow. All in all, another great day at the St. Petersburg Times.
